Your Google Business Profile (GBP) listing is the first thing clients see when they search for your business. And yet 60% of business listings in Tenerife are incomplete or out of date.
Why your Google listing matters
When someone searches “restaurant in Costa Adeje” or “photographer in Tenerife”, Google shows a 3-pack of listings before the organic results. Appearing there is the equivalent of being on the first page of a directory consulted by thousands of people every month.
Businesses with active, well-rated listings receive:
- Up to 7 times more visits to their website
- 5 times more calls than non-optimised listings
- Greater client trust before first contact
The 7 key elements of a well-optimised listing
1. Primary and secondary categories
The primary category determines which searches you appear in. Pick the most specific one possible and add up to 9 relevant secondary categories.
2. Business description
750 characters to explain what you do, who for, and why you should be chosen. Include your keywords naturally, without forcing them.
3. Professional photography
Listings with more than 10 photos receive 35% more clicks. Upload photos of the premises, team, products and services. Refresh at least once a month.
4. Regular posts
GBP posts work like mini-articles inside Google. Ideal for offers, news, events or educational content. One weekly post makes a difference.
5. Reviews and responses
Every new review is fresh content that Google indexes. Reply to all of them: positive ones to build loyalty, negative ones to demonstrate professionalism. Never ignore them.
6. Questions and answers
You can (and should) add your own questions with answers. It’s additional SEO content that resolves queries before they reach you by phone.
7. Opening hours and contact details
Keep hours up to date, including holidays. A listing with incorrect hours creates distrust and negative reviews.
The most common mistakes in Tenerife
- Listing claimed but not optimised: having access isn’t enough
- Low-quality photos: they create the opposite effect to what you want
- No response to negative reviews: silence is worse than any answer
- Inconsistent data: different name, address and phone on the website and GBP confuses Google
DIY or delegate?
Managing a GBP listing well requires between 3 and 5 hours per month if done properly: photos, posts, responses, metrics and adjustments. Many businesses prefer to delegate this to professionals to focus on their core activity.
